How We Choose Ingredients

When it comes to formulating skincare products at Nati Skin, every ingredient we use serves a clear purpose. We don’t add anything unnecessary, and we always keep our busy customers in mind—those who want effective skincare without wasting time. Here’s a deep dive into how we choose the ingredients that go into our products:

1. Focusing on the Intended Result

Our ingredient selection process starts with the result we want the product to deliver. For example, when creating our moisturizer, we wanted a lightweight feel with effective hydration. To achieve this, we prioritized selecting oils that wouldn’t feel too heavy on the skin.

We also focus on the structure of the product. A good emulsion, like a moisturizer, requires a balance of oil, water, an emulsifier, and a preservative at minimum. Once we define the structure, we carefully choose components like the oil and emulsifier that not only meet functional needs but also enhance texture, absorption, and overall skin feel.

2. Ensuring Safety and Quality

Ingredient safety is non-negotiable. For every ingredient we consider, we thoroughly review the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provided by our suppliers. We don’t just stop at one source—if multiple suppliers offer the same ingredient, we cross-check the SDS documents to verify accuracy and ensure there are no harmful properties. This rigorous process helps us maintain the highest standard of quality and safety for our customers.

3. Balancing Effectiveness with Safety

Effectiveness is all about using the right ingredients at the right concentration. We rely on formulation guidelines to determine the recommended usage rates. For example, if a preservative is recommended at 0.1% to 0.5%, we always opt for 0.5% to ensure maximum protection.

For active ingredients like niacinamide, where the recommended range is broad (1% to 6%), we dig deeper. Although 6% is within the range, using it at that level can sometimes cause irritation. Since our products are designed for multiple uses throughout the day, we select a concentration that delivers results while minimizing the risk of irritation—typically between 2% and 5%.

4. Avoiding Unnecessary Ingredients

Although we don’t subscribe to the “clean beauty” movement, we intentionally avoid adding fragrances. Fragrance may improve a product’s scent, but it offers no real benefit to the skin and increases the risk of irritation. All our products are fragrance-free because we prioritize effectiveness and safety over aesthetics.

However, if smell ever became a concern for our customers, we would consider incorporating hydrosols—which can enhance scent naturally—instead of traditional fragrances. This way, we can address preferences without compromising our commitment to safe and effective skincare.

5. Listening to Customer Feedback

Customer feedback is invaluable to us. While we design our products to be gentle and effective, we understand that everyone’s skin is unique. If we receive multiple reports of sensitivity to a product, we take it seriously. We would carefully review the formulation and, if needed, experiment with adjustments. When reformulating, we would offer sample sizes to those customers for testing, ensuring any changes lead to better outcomes without compromising the product’s original benefits.
